Discovering local places, people and their stories
Feeling the pull of the east, Kay Burns made the move from life out west to "a better life" in Newfoundland.
Ms. Burns has joined The Pilot as a freelance reporter/photographer.
The story that led her to settle down in Lewisporte begins with Ms. Burns and husband Curtis having spent nine summers at their cabin in Little Burnt Bay. Mr. Burns says the beauty, pace and lifestyle of Notre Dame Bay was a siren song, drawing her back each year. The end of summer each year brought with it sadness as she headed back to the "intensity, noise and busyness of Calgary." (more)

Support our troops - Pam Snow 1
Politics in our country have stooped a new low.
In July 2009 the Minister of National Defense Honourable Peter MacKay promised our troops a fleet of new armoured vehicles, which we all know they desperately need. It proved quite the photo opportunity for the media and the Minister, with over 300 soldiers smiling proudly and confident their return to Afghanistan would be a safer one in the near future.
Having a friend die in Afghanistan because an improvised explosive device (IED) blew apart the poorly constructed armoured vehicle he was riding in, proves that this important equipment is needed, to protect and save the lives of our soldiers while they are posted overseas. (more)

You are making a difference
One of the great things about working for a community newspaper is seeing how people demonstrate an unbelievable amount of caring and compassion when it is needed most.
Case in point is the response from schools and individuals who have taken it upon themselves to try and do what they can to help the people of Haiti who have had their lives torn apart by the Jan. 12 earthquake. (more)
