Diphtheria on Fogo Island

We may worry about influenza and other diseases today, but this item tells us what must have been the greatest worry, health wise, on Fogo Island in 1880: Diphtheria is at present prevalent at Barr'd Islands. There have been 43 cases in the past few weeks, out of which 10 deaths have taken place, and several are now lying in a precarious state.

And How about this item?

Nobody in Fogo was telling his youngsters to turn off the lights in 1880, but he might have been telling them to turn down the lamp! - Light bulb. - Mr. Thomas A Edison contributed an article on the October number of The North American Review, in which he succeeded in making the electric bulb entirely practical for illumining purposes.

Death on the Plover

I conclude with this, because, well, I just like the wording of this item. - Death. - Mr. J.H. McGilbey, one of the passengers per Plover for Fogo, died suddenly on Wednesday evening, November 21st. He took dinner at 2 o'clock and was in the saloon about four, when he retired to his state room. When called to tea by his wife, who was also on board, it was found that he was a corpse.
