NEW WORLD ISLAND - Although the New World Island Academy silent auction isn't until tomorrow, the support the project has received has already been phenomenal.

According to vice-principal Jean Link the project has been well received by the communities on New World Island again this year.

"We've put a call out to parents and community members and again this year have had good response," said Ms. Link.

The school has received a wide array of items from hooked rugs and needlework to paintings, photography and cross-stitch. Ms. Link said those who love to eat traditional Newfoundland favourites will have lots to choose from as well. There have been donations of preserves ranging from jams and jellies, pickles, rabbit, mussels, moose and seal.

Ms. Link said there are also a number of hand-crafted items such as snowshoes, lobster pots as well as items such as large and small/indoor and outdoor woodwork, quilts, handbags, clothing, tablecloths, sweaters, socks, mittens, caps, scarves, gift certificates from local restaurants, boat tour operators, nurseries, and a whole lot more.

The auction will be held in the gymnasium at New World Island Academy, Thursday, May 1. Doors will open at 6:30 with the auction itself commencing at 7:15 p.m.

"Great selection of items up for auction. You won't want to miss it!" said Ms. Link. "All money raised going towards the school playground which we plan to have fenced over the summer."
