NORRIS ARM – Preparations are underway for the official opening of the Flying Boat Festival International in Norris Arm on Friday.

The Flying Boat Festival International is a joint effort between Botwood and Norris Arm and will run from July 23 – Aug. 2.

Opening ceremonies are scheduled to take place at the Norris Arm Festival Site at 6 p.m. with Celtic Spirit Dancers, and other entertainers such as Lotus Energy, The Young and The Restless and Darren Freeman, along with a giant fireworks display, food services and game booths.

“We have lots of creative and artistic entertainment this year for the Flying Boat Festival,” said co-ordinator Tracy Card.

Celebrations on July 24 will begin with a breakfast being served at the Norris Arm Lion’s Club, a parade shortly after and games, activities and food for the whole family at noon on the festival site. Cookie the Clown and Freddy and The Young and The Restless will also provide entertainment throughout the day.

Everyone is free to bring chairs to any of the outdoor events and Ms. Card adds, “We have a lot more things available for the kids this year, as well as a rug hooking workshop, which is something new we are trying.”

An ecumenical service will be held at 3 p.m. on July 25 at the Fox Moth Heritage Centre.

On July 27, the first rug-hooking workshop will be hosted from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Pre-registration is required and can be done by calling Ms. Card at 653-2527.

On July 28 an auction will be held with lots of great items up for bid, and on Aug. 2, a Dinner Theatre will take place at the Fox Moth Heritage Centre at 8 p.m. Entertainment will be provided by Mill Road.

“The Flying Boat Festival in Norris Arm would not be what it is today without the volunteers we have,” said Ms. Card. “These are people who put in the time to make sure that everything flows without any problems and they do it without complaint.

“It is very important to recognize these people even though that are not looking for anything for the work they do.”

Everyone is encouraged to come out and take part in the number of events that will be ongoing throughout the entire week. There is something for everyone.
