LEWISPORTE & AREA — Some kids might reject the idea of working on their literacy skills during the summer months, but if they were learning while having fun that might make all the difference.

The Lewisporte Area Laubach Literacy Council is coordinating a Summer Reading For Fun program that will go ahead from July 4 - Aug. 10. Classroom space has been provided by DieTrac Technical Institute.

“It is a way for us to give back to a community that supports us so well,” said DieTrac campus administrator Hector Pearce.

Registration for the free Summer Reading For Fun will be held at DieTrac on July 3 from 9 a.m. – noon (12 p.m.) Registration is based on first-come, first-serve.

Tutoring is done in the form of one-on-one 50-minute sessions. Judith Russell of the Lewisporte Area Laubach Literacy Council steering committee said first-come, first-serve also applies to the available session slots, so early registration is encouraged. Group activities will also be scheduled in at some point during the week.

The two trained tutors will work with participants to help with literacy skills, and there may be some work on numeracy as well.

The program is open to school age children from Lewisporte and surrounding communities. Ms. Russell noted that in some school districts, teachers can make referrals for students they think would benefit from this program. Since privacy laws prevent that from happening with students from the Nova Central School District, Ms. Russell encourages parents who think their children could benefit from this tutoring opportunity to consider enrolling their child(ren).

Ms. Russell extended appreciation for DieTrac supplying the classroom space. She noted that the Town of Lewisporte had offered space for the program at the Lewisporte Stadium, which she is also greatly appreciative of, but noted the DieTrac setting suits the needs of the program better.

For more information on the Summer Reading For Fun contact Ms. Russell at 535-0020, Mabel Trenholm at 535-0615 or e-mail summer_reading@hotmail.com.
