LEWISPORTE -
The annual Relay For Life event will take place in Lewisporte on June 12.
The day is a non-competitive 12-hour event that celebrates survivorship and is a tribute to those who have struggled against the disease. All proceeds of the Relay For Life stays in this province and is used towards cancer research and support for patients undergoing treatment.
The event will get underway at 2 p.m. with the survivors walking onto the field at the recreation complex or depending on the weather; into the Lewisporte Stadium.
"There will be the opening remarks and welcoming, then the survivors will do their first lap," said Relay For Life committee chair Melanie Tucker. "After the survivors lap, the individual teams are introduced and the teams will complete their lap at the venue."
Ms. Tucker said entertainment from various local groups will begin and continue to play throughout the day and night. There will even be something for the kids to enjoy.
"Kids activities will start at 3 p.m. and there will be a Wacky Olympics for the adults around 4 p.m."
At 9:15 p.m. the luminary ceremony will begin, giving the participants and supporters an opportunity to remember loved ones who have lost their battle with cancer or to honour those who have survived.
The general public is welcome to attend the ceremony, as the luminaries provide light and inspiration to survivors, team members and other participants who walk the track. The general public is welcome to walk the track with a family member, a friend or just to show their support during the Relay.
Everyone is also encouraged to personalize their luminary for their loved ones. Many participants add photos or special mementos and messages to their luminary.
Anyone interested in purchasing a luminary can buy them online at www.cancer.ca or by contacting Ms. Chaulk at 535-2876. Luminaries will also be available during the Relay For Life.
