LEWISPORTE – The 24th Annual Mussel Bed Soiree celebrations begin Aug. 5 with a full line-up of activities for young and old.
This year’s celebrations will take place from August 5-9 and will include traditional Newfoundland meals, games of chance, the annual boat parade of lights and giant fireworks display, dances and Family Fun Day.
Soiree committee chair Derek Bennett said the committee is currently working on promoting all the soiree events.
“We are trying to put a strong emphasis on our concert because our ticket sales have been slow to date,” he said. “However, I think it is partially because of weather during previous concerts. A lot of people have indicated to me that they are waiting until the last minute to see what the forecast will be.”
This year’s Concert in the Park will feature live entertainment by Prism, Helix and Doug and the Slugs.
For the time being, staff members and volunteers are setting up booths and stages for all the events taking place throughout the annual five-day event.
“All the events are falling in place as scheduled right now,” said Mr. Bennett. “We have a great schedule of events put together - something for everyone. We have also focused on hosting the events either free or at a very low cost. We try to make it affordable for everyone.”
Mr. Bennett said volunteers are a must for the Soiree to be successful.
“If anyone is willing to help out on a gate or for any events like children activities they can certainly volunteer and get involved,” said Mr. Bennett.

All events at the 24th Annual Mussel Bed Soiree will go ahead, rain or shine.
