LEWISPORTE – Mussel Bed Soiree festivities attracted some record crowds this year, with exceptional weather to boot.

With numbers up at many family events and the adult dance at the Lewisporte Stadium, Town of Lewisporte recreation director Derek Bennett said it was great to see everyone out enjoying the five-day Soiree.

“Number wise, the family events like Story Time Trail had the same number roughly as last year and the Family Fun Day had as many if not more people taking part,” he said. “All the meals were sold out as well and the adult dance was up to about a 1,000 people.”

The annual Concert in the Park normally attracts anywhere from 2,500-3,000 people, however, this year the estimate is that there was a huge decline in numbers from previous years.

“The concert was lower then we anticipated, but everything else was well attended,” said Mr. Bennett. “

The Sunday activities on the waterfront attracted thousands of people to the waterfront area alone and that doesn’t include the hundreds of people who lined Main Street to watch the boat parade and enjoy the fabulous fireworks display.

“I spoke to many booth holders as well and everyone seems to have done great with their concessions throughout the Soiree,” said Mr. Bennett.

Mr. Bennett said appreciation should be extended to all who came out to the events and to all the staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly throughout the Soiree.

“We have a fairly large committee, about 18 members, and it helps to have that amount of volunteers donating their time to the event,” he said.

While the staff and volunteers were busy cleaning up last week, Mr. Bennett said the committee would be meeting very shortly to begin preparations for the 2011 event. The committee also encourages any feedback or ideas from people that might benefit the Soiree.

“We will be starting preparation for next year soon and we will also be evaluating this years festival and discuss if any changes should or will be made to make it bigger and better,” said Mr. Bennett. “Everyone is welcome to visit our website (www.lewisportecanada.com) and offer suggestions for upcoming events for next year or if there are any issues or concerns they have from this year that may need to be addressed. As a committee, we will certainly discuss them.”
