PROVINCIAL - The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is requesting proposals for the provisions of a freight vessel service for coastal Labrador for a 15-year term.

Topics :
Newfoundland and Labrador , Lewisporte , Goose Bay

The request for proposals includes a two-week freight delivery cycle from the primary ports of Lewisporte and Goose Bay to ports north to Nain.

"The freight shipping service is vital for the communities of coastal Labrador and this government is committed to ensuring a high-quality service well into the future," said Transportation and Works Minister Tom Hedderson in a media release. "This request for proposals will allow us to secure a modern vessel in the long term, which will meet the needs of coastal Labrador, and will ensure service continuity for years to come."

The Government of Newfoundland and Labrador is also requesting a vessel that is less than 15 years old as of June 2012 for the duration of the contract, however a vessel that is more than 15 years old may be used for up to the first three years of the contract, after which time a newer vessel must take over the service.

The deadline for submissions is April 16, 2012.
