OTTAWA — Intercity Packers Ltd of Mississauga, Ont. is recalling its Beef Burger Meat Mix because of possible Salmonella contamination.

The affected product was distributed in 5 kg cases bearing UPC 90066172180172 and lot code 046 to public and commercial food establishments in Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador.

Consumers in Newfoundland are advised to check with their store of purchase to determine if they have the affected product.

The recall was issued as health officials investigate an outbreak of Salmonella illnesses in Ottawa and southern Ontario.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall.

Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes even deadly infections.
