More awards for NL newspapers

Community papers honoured by Newspapers Atlantic

Newspapers Atlantic handed out the annual community newspaper awards at its 40th annual conference on the weekend, and TC Media's Newfoundland and Labrador weekly papers came away with a 10 awards in the 2012 Better Newspapers Competition.
The 14 TC Media weekly papers had 31 nominations in 23 categories.
"It was a very good year for community newspaper staff," says Barbara Dean-Simmons, associate managing editor for the weeklies, of the awards for the work done during 2011. "Several of these papers were recognized earlier this year at the Canadian Community Newspaper Awards. The recent accolades from Newspapers Atlantic awards is added recognition of the high quality of work being done by community newspapers in this province and a testament to the important role they play in telling the stories of their local communities."
Kevin Hiscock, General Manager of TC Media's community newspapers in the province, also applauded the staff for their awards.
"These awards certainly represent the commitment, dedication and passion that all NL community newspaper staff have for their community newspapers and the communities they serve," he said.
The Awards
John Power, Sales Manager at The Coaster in Harbour Breton, brought home one of the top industry awards when he was named Outstanding Salesperson. Mr. Power has worked with The Coaster for 12 years and consistently finds solutions for his clients.
Terry Roberts, senior editor of The Compass in Carbonear, won the award for Best Local Editorial. The award was for an editorial he wrote calling on the local town council to be more open and transparent.
The Northern Pen won three awards for its work. Awards in the Best News Story and Best Sports Story or Feature went to husband and wife team Emma and Juris Graney. The St. Anthony paper also won the award for Best Christmas Edition.
The Georgian's editor Christopher Vaughan won the Best Feature Story award for his account of how Stephenville and surrounding communities reacted after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
The Gander Beacon's columnist Frank Tibbo won the award for Best Specialty Column. Mr. Tibbo provides a glimpse into the aviation history of Gander to readers every week.
Newfoundland and Labrador staff's photography skills were also recognized in two awards. Andrea Gunn of the Grand Falls-Windsor Advertiser won for Best Photo Essay. Ms. Gunn captured the emotion of Memorial Day in Newfoundland. Nick Mercer of The Compass won for Best Sports Photo.
The Packet of Clarenville brought home the Red Lobster award for funniest mistake. The paper ran two headlines on the sports page: one announcing the season was over for its local hockey team and the other announcing "Season not over yet for Caribous."
Provincial circulation co-ordinator Marilyn Puddicombe was also honored at the awards with the "One of a Kind Award" for her commitment to the industry and her reputation region-wide for being a leader in the circulation department.
In addition to the first-place awards, community newspapers in this province were also standing finalists in several award categories.
Lifetime achievement
The awards ceremony also saw recognition for Bill Bowman for nearly 40 years of service to the community newspaper industry.
He was one of five people from the Atlantic region to be honoured with this prestigious awards.
Bowman has worked with The Compass in Carbonear for nearly 40 years, serving many of those years as editor.
"These individuals epitomize the dedication, caring, determination and selfless sacrifice required of community newspaper employees," said Inez Forbes, president of Newspapers Atlantic, at the awards ceremony.
