EMBREE - It will be a long time before Michelle Wells can get the image of a young girl lying in the middle of the street from her mind.
Around 9:40 p.m. on May 5, Ms. Wells was heading to Lewisporte with her teenage daughter. As she was driving Ms. Wells noticed three youth on the opposite side of the road. She said it was three boys, all wearing dark coloured clothing.
“I was paying attention to them to make sure no one came out in the road,” she said. “I just managed to catch sight of a girl lying on the yellow line in the middle of the road just in front of me. I slammed on the brakes.”
At first she didn’t know why the girl was lying there in the middle of Main Street. Ms. Wells knew who the girl was. The girl jumped up and went over where the other three boys were standing on the side of the road.
“I backed up, and I think the fright of me coming back to where they were made them run away behind a shed,” said Ms. Wells.
Ms. Wells knew where the girl lived and went to see her parents. She told them what had happened.
“They called out for her to come inside and asked her if she had done this and why,” she said. “She didn’t deny it and her response as to why was, ‘I don’t know’.
“The parents didn’t seem as upset with her as I would have wished they were.”
