As a reporter, I meet many unique and fascinating people on a daily basis. From the local volunteer who wants to make a difference to a senior citizen with an interesting talent - my workweek is never dull.
However, this week I met quite a remarkable young woman. She stood out from all the rest in my quest for news for this issue of The Pilot. She doesn't run marathons or work for a local organization - she's an energetic Grade 2 student at Lewisporte Academy and whether or not she is aware; she has already made a difference.
Seven-year-old Hannah Curlew recently made a $350 donation to the Exploits Valley SPCA. How did she do this you ask?
Well Hannah took it upon herself to involve her friends in the worthwhile cause and included a note on her birthday invitations that she would much rather a donation for the SPCA then presents.
The fact that Hannah came up with the idea herself proves she is already a shining example to her peers and a role model.
With Hannah's birthday only five days away from Christmas, she wasn't thinking about the magnitude of gifts she could have received - instead she thought about the animals that would be spending their Christmas at the SPCA.
She took the opportunity to ensure food, warmth and care for man's best friend and in my books that makes her quite an outstanding citizen.
Way to go Hannah!
Helpful Hannah
