Dog days of summer are upon us, with the official beginning on June 21.
Hopefully we'll see more sun then rain this year, but either way I write this column with many of the students, both continuing and graduating, in mind.
To the continuing students, who are finishing up their school year and will shuffle once again through the doors of their respective schools in September to be another grade ahead and another year closer to graduation - I hope you enjoy these summer months.
Sleep in, but don't sleep your days away. Try something new this summer - whether it be kayaking, sailing or taking in the culture by visiting a museum or local festival. Enjoy camping or swimming with your friends. Do what makes you happy, while you have the freedom to do what you want (within reason), without any obligations or greater responsibilities.
To the graduating students I hope you take the time aside from filling out registration forms or working to really appreciate your family and friends. Your family have stood by you through the rough teenage days (we all have them) and the times when you needed help with studying or a ride to your friends house. Not only have they provided you with the necessities of life, but with love and support.
When it comes to your friends, don't decline that invitation to spend some quality time with them this summer. As someone who has been blessed with high school and college friends, I know all too well that it's very hard to get everyone together after graduation. You rarely see them after you've gone your separate ways and as the years go by, you'll regret not having spent additional time with them when you could have.
As you all receive your drivers' license, be safe. Don't be careless or think you're invincible, because an accident can happen easily and in a spilt-second. You don't want to end your life before it begins.
Ask anyone and I'm almost certain they will say the summer after graduation, before college, was the most memorable.
Whether it's young love, that first road trip with friends or a fire on the beach with everyone you hang out with - take it all in. Take hundreds of photos, share in laughter and remember the moments that made you smile.
Ultimately, make it a summer to remember. You'll thank yourself when you're older.
