The Pilot was very pleased this week to present the articles and photos on pages 4-5A that highlight $20,000 worth of charitable donations that have taken place in the community in the last little while.

The Kinsmen Club of Notre Dame/Lewisporte Area Consumers Co-op and the Lewisporte Lions Club/Lewisporte Esso/Ted's Esso came together to contribute $5,000 each to seeing that the residents of North Haven Manor have lounge/dining areas that will be welcoming for them to relax and have an enjoyable dining experience.

Then through the gala held as part of the North Atlantic Marina & Recreational Boating Conference held in Lewisporte $5,000 was donated to Daffodil Place and another $5,000 went to the Children's Wish Foundation. The organizers didn't have to make the gala a charitable event, but it goes to show that the community spirit of caring and cooperation is always at the forefront, and this was viewed as an opportunity to do good to help others. In addition, a portion of the proceeds of the admission to the boat show held during the conference went to the Avalon Dragons dragon boat team, a group consisting of breast cancer survivors.

Then this past weekend the Health Foundations Regatta held at the Lewisporte Marina resulted in total funds raised of $33,500 (look to the July 22 issue for highlights of the event).

It never ceases to amaze us here at The Pilot the generosity of the people who live in Lewisporte and surrounding communities. Times may be tough financially, but people are still finding a way to be generous with their charitable donations and support of a number of initiatives to help others. Everyone should give themselves a pat on the back for making these contributions to help others possible. It wasn't the first time we have seen the generosity that exists locally and knowing the hearts of residents it definitely won't be the last.
