There never been any doubt that the passenger/freight service to Labrador originating from Newfoundland is vital to the people who depend on it as a means of transportation and for receiving goods.
The importance of that service hasn't dwindled even with the opening of the Trans Labrador Highway (TLH) in December of last year.
Just last week the provincial government announced a pilot project with the goal of providing a year-round ferry service between the Island and Labrador across the Strait of Belle Isle (see full details from the press release on page 3A).
With the introduction of this service it becomes even more apparent how a ferry connection can work in conjunction with the TLH to be of a benefit to the residents and businesses of Labrador.
With this news comes the question that is on the tip of everyone's tongue - how does this impact the seasonal passenger/freight service originating from Lewisporte to the coast of Labrador? This is something The Pilot will be following up on as the 2010 shipping season will be here before you know it.
In the page 1A article pertaining to Pam Snow's interview with Lewisporte District MHA Wade Verge he commented on the importance of the continuation of the service.
No doubt it is on the minds of people who fought to save the service in 2003 and will be again in 2010.
