Now that the winter weather is upon is, it's hard to picture those hot summer days where people flock to whatever water source is available to escape from the heat.
That hasn't stopped the Twillingate Town Council from addressing the swimming pool issue for their community. As is noted in the council report on page 2B, the current swimming pool has been declared unsafe and recommended to be demolished.
Now the recreation committee is already looking at a replacement pool for Twillingate and have moved forward on a plan to bring forth to council for a $600,000 above-ground pool. They are examining their options and recognizing not just the recreational value in having a swimming pool in their community. A pool would be attractive to potential residents, especially those with families.
No doubt there is a lot to think about as the hope is to find a way to secure a 90 per cent government -10 per cent municipal funding agreement and then determine if operating costs fit into their budget. It is something the residents want and council is obviously open to examining their options.
For years now groups of people have tried and given up, then tried again to have a pool built for Lewisporte and area residents to enjoy. It's not that council has been resistant to the efforts, it just doesn't seem to have gone very far.
It will be interesting to keep an eye on what happens in Twillingate to see if the model there is successful and can be applied to making a pool a reality for Lewisporte.
