Cancer has touched everyone at some point. Maybe a personal experience with the disease, maybe a relative, friend or a co-worker - either way is doesn't discriminate.

Cancer doesn't care how old you are, what ethnicity you are or where you live. It doesn't care that you have a newborn child waiting for you at home, that you just received that promotion at work or you're getting ready to retire.

As a community paper, we are always there at the annual Relay For Life events to help remember those who have lost their fight and to celebrate those who have survived.

The Relay For Life's motto is "Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back." and it is fast approaching. This year's event is planned for June 12 at the Lewisporte Recreation Complex.

For those who haven't attended a Relay For Life - this is your opportunity to experience the event. This can be the year that you decide to come out and show your support. Maybe you know of someone who is fighting cancer right now or in remission and would like to join them in a lap around the track or even cheer from the sidelines. Everyone is welcome to take part in this worthwhile event.

The Relay For Life requires no special skills, no expertise or talent - just a willingness to be part of a cause.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society a total of 2,700 new cases of cancer will occur in Newfoundland and Labrador this year and a total of 790 men and 600 women will die from cancer.

Everyone's help is needed in finding a cure. Most importantly, the event is largely a celebration of life. Additionally, the money raised or spent on luminaries for the event will go towards the greatest cause there is - fighting cancer.

We'll be there - will you?
