If you look through The Pilot this week you will notice an advertisement in Section B pertaining to the newspaper seeking interest for social notes correspondents for communities throughout the Islands. In the coming weeks advertisements will also be placed for other communities throughout the coverage area for correspondents.

This marks the start of the process to bring social notes back to The Pilot. Readers who have been with us over the years will recall that social notes came from communities throughout the coverage area. Contained in each social note piece were details of community happenings, general birthday or anniversaries, visitors and more.

The social notes is a way to communicate what is happening in your community and to share news of interest to your neighbours. In addition, we are welcoming correspondents to send along photos of their community whether it be photos they took themselves or ones someone would like to submit through them of scenery, a community event or something of interest.

Correspondents will also be vital links to their communities as we will encourage them to send along news ideas that they think the editorial department at The Pilot would be interested in following up on with more in-depth coverage. It will also give people in the community who might not call The Pilot office directly, the opportunity to convey a story idea to a correspondent who could in turn share it with editorial staff.

We look forward to the chance of covering more news and human interest stories from communities throughout the coverage area. It is only through open lines of communication that we can effectively know what is happening throughout the vast coverage area encompassed by The Pilot.

So if you are someone who enjoys writing and communicating with the people around you, why not consider becoming a community correspondent? All that is required is a telephone, and/or Internet access to send and receive e-mail and access to a computer. If you are interested or would like to know more details please don’t hesitate to contact Karen Wells at 535-6910 or e-mail editor@pilotnl.ca
