Hats off to the volunteers who made the Friends of the Boardwalk Day such a success last Thursday.
These friends of the Woolfrey’s Pond Boardwalk in Lewisporte volunteered their time for a project that saw necessary repairs to the area that is a magnet for local residents and visitors to the community and Woolfrey’s Pond Park.
The seven-kilometre boardwalk/nature trail is as much a recreational asset to the community as say the Lewisporte Stadium. People of all ages flock to the boardwalk to enjoy a leisurely stroll or to get a great workout — complete with a climb to the lookout that if it hasn’t taken your breath away, the amazing view overlooking Lewisporte will. The boardwalk is a unique feature for campers at the adjoining Woolfrey’s Pond Park, and one of the reasons why people return there year after year.
The volunteers taking part in this boardwalk effort also regularly walk the boardwalk themselves. They know the value it holds and believe it is worth the investment of their time and energy to keep it well maintained.
One interesting thing to note about visiting with each group and taking their photos for The Pilot is that while they were there to work, everyone had a smile on their face. Everyone was in high spirits and you could feel from the energy they conveyed, that this was a true labour of love. They were joking and laughing, even as some of the work required a great physical effort. You would be at a loss to find that at most work sites where people are paid for their labour.
It just goes to show that they are true “Friends of the Boardwalk” and in turn, through their efforts to keep the boardwalk in tip-top shape, they are friends to all of us who enjoy what the boardwalk has to offer.
