After much planning and anticipation the festivities for the Lewisporte Come Home Year 2012 are set to get underway.
Beginning on Friday and continuing on into next week, friends and family will have many opportunities to come together and share in the community celebration. One of the great things about this Come Home Year is that you don’t need to register to take part. The events are open to everyone, and not just those from Lewisporte. Residents of the surrounding communities (and beyond) are also connected to Lewisporte and are encouraged to take part. So it’s basically an open invitation to everyone who would like to join in the festivities.
The events get underway on Friday evening with an adult only Kitchen Party featuring a variety of local entertainers.
Saturday head to the Scott Martin Memorial Field for the co-ed softball tournament and follow that up by catching up with acquaintances at the Meet and Greet that evening featuring guest speaker Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor MP Scott Simms.
New and experienced kayakers can make their way to the Woolfrey’s Pond Municipal Park beach on Sunday for a free lesson. That evening there will be an ecumenical service with emcee Glenn Tetford and guest speaker Glen Newman from Teen Challenge.
For those interested in street hockey there will be a tournament at the tennis court for participants age 10-15 on Monday.
On Tuesday fill up with a Newfie Bruch at the Kin Centre and then walk it off with a hike at Woolfrey’s Pond. Then fill up again with a BBQ at the beach.
Comedy night will be fun for the adults, featuring comedians Steve Coombs and John Sheehan.
Everyone is encouraged to join in the walking parade from the mall to the grand opening of the new track. Live entertainment and a community BBQ will follow.
The second annual Lewisporte Harbour Cup will also be fun to watch or participate in on Wednesday.
Then next Thursday there will be a kite-flying event, with kites being provided.
Throughout the week the Hann’s Point Players Theatre Festival have performances scheduled.
