Dear Editor,
Many of us remember where we were the night of Feb. 15, 1981, when the Ocean Ranger disaster occurred. As a favour, I'm hoping to contact a Fogo area man who was on the Burin Peninsula that night. He was travelling home on Slaney's taxi from his work as a draggerman in Marystown when the taxi could not proceed any further than the Bay L'Argent area in the blizzard. He got out and joined a friend of mine, Clyde Reid of Baine Harbour, who was the plow operator trying to open the highway there.
Mr. Reid is now 85 years of age and has forgotten the Fogo man's name, but certainly not the company and assistance the man provided him that night which was much appreciated. Mr. Reid operated the plow for 27 years and says it was the worse night he ever experienced on the highway. The engine died and they had no source of heat in the plow that night. The grader was taken away on a crane shortly thereafter.
Mr. Reid would like to thank the man for being a good samaritan. If the man or one of his acquaintances or family member reads the message, I can be contacted at (709) 738-3511 and Mr. Reid at (709) 443-2116 in Baine Harbour.
