Dear Editor,
The comments made by Minister (Paul) Oram in the House of Assembly this past week concerning a doctor in Lewisporte was shameful. I have never seen a Minister of the Crown act so arrogant, so aloof, so callous and disdainful as this Minister.
The doctor he was referring to was born and bred in Lewisporte. She was a model student in school, an excellent student at MUN and after becoming a Medical Doctor decided to come back to Lewisporte to practice medicine. She is committed to her patients and sensitive to their situations. She has superb interpersonal skills and goes that extra mile for her patients and her community. She would be a valuable asset to any community in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Minister Oram dismisses all that and simply says that he has three doctors lined up to replace her. Let me remind you again Mr. Oram, the rural areas of this province want community doctors. We want doctors that are involved in and care about our communities. We want doctors like Dr. Brenda Penney. These things matter to us, if NOT to our Minister of Health.
Sincerely,
Hector Pearce
