Something to consider

Dear Editor,
There are at least two special interest group, as well as Central Health and the Lewisporte Family Medical Clinic addressing the issue of physician recruitment and retention in Lewisporte.

Outgoing Central Health CEO Karen McGrath indicated a shift in focus to prevention and self managed care in providing health services to the population of our region. Nurse practitioners have the knowledge and skills to play a major role achieving this change in focus. Has the option of employing Nurse Practitioners in a medical practice in Lewisporte been given serious consideration as a long term solution in providing consistent point of entry health care services?

Nurse Practitioners are presently employed in Botwood and New World Island Clinics,to name just two. Reports from patients receiving health services, ie examinations, prescriptions, ordering investigations and monitoring chronic conditions are extremely positive. I would challenge all stake holders in trying to resolve the present physician problems to find innovative approaches so the knowledge and skills of Nurse Practitioners can be utilized in a private medical practice.
