TWILLINGATE - It's down to the eleventh hour for organizers of the third annual Unity Games for Twillingate-New World Island & Boyd's Cove scheduled for July 1-3.

The organizing committee met with project co-ordinator Holly Anstey on June 9 to review plans already made and discuss any concerns and changes needed.

"We still have a need for volunteers," advised Anstey. "Anyone who would be willing to help out even for half a day can contact me at any time at 628-7454.

"Also we want to encourage fans to come out and support the students, not only for the opening and closing ceremonies but also for any of the games."

One of the concerns being voiced relates to transportation noted Anstey. She explained that transportation between venues will be looked after by a bussing system with no responsibility on the part of parents. Anyone wishing further information in this regard or any relevant information should contact the Games web site at (www.tnwidevasoc.ca/games/unity.html)

An addition to this year's activities will be a partnering with Primary Health at Twillingate to help celebrate Canada Day as well as helping the local recreation committee at Bridgeport in their annual Canada Day celebrations. It should prove to be a very meaningful part of the project suggested Anstey.

The Isles of Notre Dame MHA Derrick Dalley has expressed his support for the Unity Games, noting that the provincial government for the third consecutive year has issued a $10,000 grant for the games.

"The issuing of this grant for the third consecutive year reflects the good work and commitment of the committee and is significant for the region," he said. "It is undoubtedly a credit to the volunteers who take responsibility for the project."

Dalley explained that the funding from the Department of Tourism, Culture and Recreation is a result of partnering with Recreation Newfoundland and Labrador with the goal to increasing physical activity among youth.

Anstey advised that some 180 participants have signed up for the games but it is still not too late for those aged 10 to 18 years to register.
