BIRCHY BAY - It was an exciting day for Birchy Bay resident Johnny Canning when he received his letter in the mail confirming his spot on the Provincial High Performance Program Under 15 team at the Atlantic Challenge Cup in October.

The letter was well-received by Johnny, who had to complete two separate tryout seesions, once in Deer Lake in July and again in Gander in August before the team was picked. Being considered one of the top 20 players in his age group is an accomplishment that is a testament of hard work that has paid off for this hockey player. He acknowledges that he felt the competition was tough at the try-outs but figured he performed well enough to earn a spot on the team.

It will certainly be a tournament full of memories and experiences as it will be the first time Johnny has traveled outside the province for competitive hockey.

To prepare for the tournament, Johnny has been doing some summer training through weightlifting and running to keep in game shape. He will be lacing up the skates in the Lewisporte Minor Hockey League again this year playing in the Bantam Division.
