LEWISPORTE The sport of broomball has seen a recent decline in the last number of years with only a few leagues/teams still in existence in the province. One of those teams will be heading to the World Championships in Burnaby, British Columbia in November.
A team from Bishops Falls named the Newfie Bullets will be making the trip to compete in the tournament. Lewisporte resident Lisa Lewis makes the trip into Bishops Falls every week to compete in the league and enjoys the sport to the fullest.
She began playing broomball in 1985 in Windsor and has been playing with the Bishops Falls team for more than 10 years. During those years, she has played in many Provincial and National tournaments in which the team has had much success. While Lewis didnt play in the 2006 worlds, her team traveled to Minnesota to compete in the event and placed third at that tournament.
Lewis has been involved in many sports leagues in Lewisporte. She recently played in a ball hockey league that was formed in 2006 as well as a softball league that was also formed in the area, however, both of the leagues folded due to the lack of players. Lisa continued her travels to Bishops Falls to play the sport she loves and has played for many years.
Broomball, which is considered to be the alternative winter sport, was once one of the most popular sports in the Lewisporte area, both in the mens and womens leagues, but has since become non-existent in this area with the sport being played in the larger populated towns.
By playing in the world level tournament, Lewis will gain experience playing against some of the best broomball players in the world with many countries participating in the event to decide the world champions.
