Female Under-17 Provincial West Coast Basketball banner

"The rafters are filling up!"

Not a complaint really but more an expression of amazement by the physical education teacher at J.M. Olds Collegiate as he reflected on the number of banners that are being raised to the ceiling of the gymnasium over the past couple of years. The newest one? The Provincial West Coast Under-17 Female Basketball championship, won by the Tigers at Gander on April 24-25.

A total of five teams competed for the title with a round-robin series to determine the two top teams for the championship match. The Tigers first played the team from Gander Collegiate and topped them by eight points, then they played Stephenville High and took their only defeat by some seven points. The next team to face the Tigers was the squad from G.C. Rowe of Corner Brook with Twillingate getting a fairly easy win by some 15 points. St. Paul's of Gander also proved to be a relatively easy win with the Tigers outscoring them by 20 points.

The championship game had the Tigers face the only team that had given them any degree of difficulty. Stephenville High played an excellent game, reported Tigers coach Winston Jenkins, "but the difference was that our girls played even better."

The final score had Twillingate winning by 14 points.

Mr. Jenkins explained that their banner stated "West Coast" because the province had been divided up by the Newfoundland Labrador Basketball Association into two districts - East and West. Everything east of Gander was East Coast, with all schools west of gander including Gander falling into the West Coast division. However, there was to be no final competition between East and West.

And probably a good thing - because JMOC may have had to put up with yet another banner!
