Although the Twillingate Combines drew first blood in the initial game of the Central Newfoundland Intermediate Hockey series at Twillingate on Friday, Nov. 20, the Lewisporte Sea Hawks went on to take the game 5-3.

Brent White early in the first period at 2:06 on assists from Mike Grimes and Nathan Rogers opened the scoring for the Combines. It wasn't until the 11:13 mark of that period that Graham Coish from Dave Ryan tied the game 1-1.

The second period in scoring belonged to Lewisporte with the Sea Hawks racking up three unanswered goals.

Captain Greg Eveleigh from Mitch Oake broke the tie at 0:25 to make it 2-1 for the visitors. Then at 8:32, Oake, unassisted, put his team ahead 3-1.

With just five seconds remaining in the period, Ryan from Jody Curlew widened the gap to 4-1.

Rogers with help from Brady Watkins brought the Combines a little closer at 4-2 at the 5:38 mark of the third while the Sea Hawks were shorthanded.

At 6:06 Curlew from Matt Dwyer widened the margin again to 5-3. But the Combines came close and while they were short-handed they got a goal from Justin Bath at the 13:33 point, unassisted, with Bath taking the puck the length of the ice and scoring.

An estimated 400-500 fans watched the game and seemed pleased with the effort put forward by each team in a game that was somewhat unusual for hockey at that level with the players not being permitted to body-check.

Penalties were minimal, however, with the Sea Hawks being assessed four minor and the Combines with six by referee Josh Baggs.
