CENTRAL -

Kayaking Newfoundland and Labrador (KNL) and the Transport Canada Office of Boating Safety are extending the opportunity for everyone to become more confident in their abilities in a kayak during their Central Chapter Safety Day on June 26 at Notre Dame Provincial Park.

Kayaking is a growing sport in Newfoundland and Labrador and the Safety Day gives kayakers the opportunity to practice basic strokes, kayak control, rescues and demonstrations.

KNL member Chris Vincent said the event is always a success, with many beginners coming out to experience a kayak for the first time.

"It's going to be a little bit different this year," said Mr. Vincent. "We will have representatives there that are bringing kayaks so anyone who has never tried kayaking before can come and get fitted for a kayak and take to the water.

"And for anyone interested in purchasing a kayak there will be an opportunity to do so. There will be a number of different styles there to choose from."

Mr. Vincent is requesting that anyone who is interested in participating in the Safety Day event be at the park for 9:30 a.m.

"We will be on the water from 10 a.m. - 12 p.m., with a lunch provided," he said. "Then we will take to the water again from 1- 3 p.m. However, if someone only wanted to be in the water for an hour, well that choice is up to them. There is no obligation on their part."

There is no charge to take part and there will be a number of lifejackets available for kayakers. However, bringing along a lifejacket that has been properly fitted would be preferred.

Mr. Vincent requests anyone interested in attending or is looking for more information on the event to contact him at 535-8447.
