NEW WORLD ISLAND —  The New World Island Prowlers will be heading to the Provincial ‘AAA’ Volleyball tournament this weekend in Wesleyville.

The senior boys team advanced to the tournament after finishing second in the Regional tournament on Nov. 19. The regional tournament normally would advance the top team in the tourney however, the regional winner Wesleyville, was also hosting the provincials, so the Prowlers received a wildcard entry in the tournament.

The Prowlers narrowly missed winning the regionals, losing games by a mere two or three points. Advancing to the provincials is a first for the New World Island school in the senior boys division and the team is excited and eager to play.

The provincial tournament will eight teams from the Province including one from Nain, Labrador which is also a first for their region.

Prowlers coach Corey Canning is proud of his team and their accomplishments thus far in the season.

“We played an invitational tournament in Glenwood earlier this year in which we won,” he said. “We also had a perfect record of 4-0 at Volleyfest before losing in the quarterfinals and we narrowly missed winning the regionals — so it’s really good to see the boys play well.”

Canning also complimented the teachers and parents for their dedication to the team.

Special thanks to our teacher sponsor, Connor Fudge, our vice principal, John Williams, as well as all the parents,” he said. “We could not do with out their support."
