LEWISPORTE – The Lewisporte Pee-wee Seahawks captured the Subway Classic on Jan. 22 in fine fashion, winning 4-3 in overtime.
The tournament was played at the Lewisporte Stadium and was a very competitive tournament for all teams. Participating in the tournament were teams from Bay Roberts, Gander, Bonavista and host Lewisporte.
The road to gold though wasn’t an easy one for the Seahawks as they had a tough round robin series with 1 win, 1 loss and 1 tie. They came to play in the playoffs though and scored when it counted.
The championship was a nail-biter from start to finish with the score being a close one throughout. While it looked like Lewisporte would capture the title in regulation time, Bay Roberts scored late to force overtime to decide the gold medal. Hunter Downtown would turn out to be the hero on this day scoring the overtime goal on a breakaway which sealed the deal for the Seahawks.
After the game, many of the players admitted the nervousness of playing in overtime for the championship. Hunter, who scored the winning goal, emphasized that when he said, “Playing in overtime was tough, realizing that the next goal will win the tournament.”
Hunter got his break partway through the OT and took full advantage, putting it in the back of the net. It’s not the first time Downtown has been on a breakaway as he as excelled in the Pee-wee division, making the ‘AAA’ Central team this year as well.
Riley Foss, who joined Minor Hockey for the first time this year, was playing in his first ever tournament at home and was also one excited hockey player.
“It was awesome to win the gold medal like we did,” he said.
Riley provided some offense for his team earlier in the tournament as he netted a goal against Gander.
This is a busy time for the local players as the weekends are full of travel and tournaments leading up to the Easter Provincial tournaments in April.
