FOGO ISLAND — A 17 year dry spell has ended at Fogo Island Central Academy (FICA).

The senior girls basketball team, the Hawks, have claimed the ‘AA’ Provincial title, bringing home the first school sports banner for the school since 2000 and the first basketball banner since 1994, the same year the Grade 12 players were born.

The event was celebrated with a pep rally at FICA to recognize the achievement and dedication of the players and coaching staff.

Coach Janet Facey couldn’t be prouder. She began as an assistant coach with the team in 2009. The Hawks are a tight-knit unit with 11 on the team — 10 of those were returning players from last season.

“We have a strong core group,” she said. “Last year we had 15 players. Some of the younger players have moved up and have done really well.”

Leading up to their Provincial win the Hawks had a good season, having gone undefeated at the Lakewood Invitational.

They hosted the Regionals where they lost by a tiny margin of three points to Pearson Academy of Wesleyville. Facey said they applied as a wildcard for the Provincials and were awarded the spot. That wildcard placing turned out to be a stroke of luck as the girls went through the tournament undefeated. The final was a rematch against Pearson where the Hawks came out on top with a score of 56-42.

It was a special moment for the Hawks who just missed out on the Provincial title last year, bringing home a silver medal in 2011.
