CENTRAL — The Central Chapter of Kayak Newfoundland and Labrador (KNL) has a mandate to promote kayaking, with promotion of kayaking safety being paramount.
On Saturday, June 23 they will be offering a sea kayaking safety day in Lewisporte.
“The purpose is to provide a day of skill sharing and practice for experienced kayakers and to introduce it to new sea kayakers,” said Central Chapter KNL member Chris Vincent. “We want to get new kayakers especially started off on the right foot in regards to safety.”
Topics to be covered include necessary equipment required by law and also equipment recommended for thermal protection. The differences between different types of kayaks (sea, white water and recreational) will also be addressed.
“This is beneficial for anyone considering purchasing a kayak to get to know what each type is for and what will best suit the purpose they have in mind,” said Mr. Vincent.
Rescue skills and boat handling will also be part of the day which will get underway at 9:30 a.m. at Woolfrey’s Pond Municipal Park in Lewisporte. There will be two hours on the pond with skill introductions and practice. Lunch will be provided by KNL and there will be prize draws.
While anyone who has a kayak and equipment is encouraged to bring it along, those just new to the sport can try out some kayaks that will be available at the Woolfrey’s Pond Session.
Mr. Vincent reminds people this is not a kayak course, but rather a day to practice and exchange skills.
This will be followed by a paddle on the Bay of Exploits. There will be limited kayaks available for this event, so if you don’t have your own and want to take part in the paddle early registration is necessary as this will be a first-come, first-served opportunity.
Members and non-members of KNL are welcome to take part in any of the events being held on June 23. Organizers would appreciate anyone planning on attending to contact them in advance to register so they know how much food to prepare for lunch.
