The group held its ethnic cooking class followed by a variety show at the Kinsmen Centre in Lewisporte March 9.
The cooking class is the second such event; the first class featured Indian cuisine. The events are part of the club’s live, laugh and learn program. The program was made possible by a $3,150 grant from the provincial governments Community Healthy Living Fund in 2016. The group received the grant to develop a wellness and social development program consisting of 12 monthly activities.
A guest chef prepared the meal and offered preparation instructions to the roughly 30 guests. Members of the 50 plus club were treated to a three-course meal consisting of Italian wedding soup, chicken and sausage tossed penne with a tomato herb roasted sauce followed by tiramisu for dessert.
“So we’ve got Chef Josh Boyde from Twillingate, he did an Indian meal for us last spring and now he is doing Italian,” said organizer Brenda Blagdon. “We thought this time we’d stick to something more people are used to.”
Blagdon says based on the success of some of the events the group will pursue another grant to continue the program.
“Today is actually almost the end of it…, but we are just about cluing up,” said Blagdon. “We picked out the things that were really popular…, so I’ve just applied for a small grant to do a little extra.”
The group has also applied for another grant that will promote physical activity. Blagdon says membership in the group is strong at 72 members and the group is looking for ways to maintain the momentum.
“We try to have a variety of things, so if someone is not interested in this, they may be interested in that,” Blagdon told the Pilot. “So we’ve had fun doing the program.”
