LEWISPORTE, NL — The shelves of the Interfaith Goodwill Centre Food Bank received a welcome donation recently as a challenge was issued throughout the Lewisporte and Area Minor Hockey Association to see which division could collect the most food items.
Association president Rodney Foss said the initiative came about after receiving the challenge from the Gander Minor Hockey Association to give back to their communities through a food collection drive.
“We decided to take on the challenge,” Foss said. “Our Association has been on the receiving end of many donations throughout our hockey seasons and this is the very least we can do.
“Many times throughout our hockey season, parents and players are often out looking for donations for our invitational hockey tournaments, which local businesses kindly contribute to. Maybe our players are out selling tickets for our fundraising efforts. Whatever it is, our association has been very fortunate, and we are only too happy to give back to our community. We hope to do more of this sort of thing in the future.”
For one week the challenge was held, with hundreds of items being collected for the local food bank. The Atom division alone brought in over 100 items. For their efforts they were awarded with a pizza party from Greco.
Foss said the initiative was well received by parents and players, so they hope to do it again next year.
