Lewisporte-Twillingate MHA Derek Bennett joined in the family snowshoe and ski event with the news that the provincial government has allocated $10,262 for the trail.
The funds were made available through the Department of Children, Senior and Social Development’s Community Healthy Living Fund.
The funds will be split with $3,000 being used to purchase snowshoes and skis, allowing residents to take part in the popular winter sports.
The remaining $7,262 will be used to purchase the necessary material to construct a storage shed for the snowmobile, groomer and accessories.
“I am very pleased to announce this funding that will further enhance recreation opportunities for residents of Lewisporte and area,” Bennett said.
“As former recreation director and now parliamentary secretary to the Department of Children, Seniors and Social Development, I am a strong advocate for sport and recreation. The physical and mental benefits of being physically active leads to a healthier, happier and more productive lifestyle. It also helps develop strong social networks and more cohesive communities.”
The Community Healthy Living Fund provides funding to communities, community groups and organizations to plan and deliver initiatives to improve the health and well being of residents of the province, to enhance opportunities for people to live healthy, active lifestyles, and to promote the creation of age-friendly communities.
