Making a difference

SUMMERFORD, NL — The spirit of sharing is something that extends well beyond the holiday season for Brynn Newman.

The Grade 12 student at New World Island Academy from Boyd’s Cove took it upon herself — with the support of her family, especially grandmother Carol Newman —to hold two yard sales earlier this year, where Brynn sold books from her own collection. They also had a table of crafts and baked goods set up at a craft fair in Boyd’s Cove.

Through those efforts and people making donations, Brynn recently presented her Kindergarten to Grade 12 school with a donation totalling $550 in support of the breakfast program. Those funds will be matched by the Kids Eat Smart Foundation, making the overall effort worth $1,100.

Principal Carolyn Clarke said this is an important contribution to the breakfast program.

“That’s several weeks of funding for the breakfast program right there,” she said.

Program coordinator Kelly Hearn is proud of Brynn’s efforts.

“I think it’s absolutely wonderful to see a student take this on her own initiative,” she said.

Clarke noted that the breakfast program is open to each student and staff member who chooses to avail of it. It is offered throughout the week, where participants can choose grab and go items to help fuel their day. It seems there is one favourite item on the breakfast menu at the school though. There’s just something about toast day that has everyone working up an appetite.

Hearn notes that donations to the program are always appreciated, and those contributions made to the school are matched dollar for dollar by the Kids Eat Smart Foundation.

The school is also building their volunteer base and anyone interested in helping out is welcome to join in the breakfast program initiative.
