FOGO ISLAND, NL — The largest film festival in the world devoted to all things culinary is coming to the Fogo Island Inn.
Devour! The Food Film Fest is set to take place Friday, Nov. 3 to Sunday, Nov. 5.
Festival founder, Chef Michael Howell, will collaborate with the Fogo Island Inn Kitchen Collective to create a six-course dinner menu pairing six award-winning films with ingredients sourced from the lands and waters of Fogo Island.
Bringing true meaning to the phrase “watch what you eat,” guests will take in the award-winning short films — each running two to 13 minutes — that inspire each course and also explore Fogo Island.
The films are:
From Milpa to Mesa (a two-minute film about heirloom corn in Mexico)
In A Nutshell (an inspirational six-minute animation)
Bacon & Greens (a lovely, lyrical take on the staples of Irish cooking – boiled meat, potatoes and greens)
Cod-Pot Fishing Fogo (featuring life-long Fogo Islanders Aubrey and Marie Payne and their sustainable method of fishing)
Why This Road: Dan Portelance (a tear-inducing glimpse into the life of a Massachusetts cook who encounters one obstacle after another)
Fruit (a thoughtful and quirky piece by Croatian director Ivan Mirko Senjanović)
Cheese (by Canadian film director Hannah Cheesman)

The Ovens of Cappoquin (about a small bakery in County Waterford, Ireland)
Mr. Salty (showcasing Newfoundlander Peter Burt’s salt production technique) The Land, The Sea (focused on longtime deep sea fisherman turned goat farmer, Gabriel Flaherty of Aran Islands Goats Cheese)
Fogo Island’s own story of Hand. Line. Cod, Justin Simms’ NFB film that follows the reversal of a 20-year moratorium on North Atlantic cod fishing and the fishermen leading the sustainable revolution in this remote place.
