BUCHANS, NL – Valentine’s Day was celebrated in fine style at Lakeside Academy in Buchans.
Well over 100 people were guests at the annual Valentine’s Day tea, a tradition that’s more than 20 years strong.
Tables were set with tablecloths and napkins, with chocolate hearts and centrepieces of red heart foil flowers in vases. Volunteers prepared a lunch of cookies and sandwiches and Buchans Patrol Junior Canadian Rangers served the tea.
Principal Barbara Rideout welcomed guests and Buchans Sparks, Brownies and Girl Guides took to the stage to perform the action song “Skinnamarink” along with leader Paula White.
Students from Kindergarten to Grade Six took turns reciting poems and singing songs such as “If you love me and you know it,” “You’ve got a friend in me,” and “I made a Valentine for you.”
Teachers Christine Lafitte and Jeremy Chippett joined in the singing with a couple of songs each, including John Denver’s “Country Roads” and Elvis Presley’s “I Can’t Help Falling in Love.”
Adam Kirby and guest Heather Chippett cut the cake. Before lunch was served, primary and elementary students sang the blessing “Johnny Appleseed.”
