PETLEY, N.L.— Calvin Colbourne grew up fishing off Pilley’s Island, so to see a school of capelin wasn’t that big of a big deal him.
However, a video shot by Colbourne of a large school of capelin just off Petley, Random Island, has become a big deal.

Colbourne’s video, shared to Facebook on July 8, has, as of the afternoon of July 11, been viewed over 230,000 times, and shared by over 5,000 people.
“I took out my camera and took a little video, and of course I put it on Facebook. But I didn’t realize it was going to escalate like it did,” Colbourne told The Packet.
“I grew up in the fishing boat as a young lad, and I seen a lot of capelin. It wasn’t a big deal for me, looking at capelin.”
He sees he put the video on Facebook mainly because he has friends and family in places like Alberta who he thought might be interested in seeing the capelin, but know says that the video has reached places as far as Ireland, Russia, and the United States.
He says he’s amazed by how far it as travelled.
Colbourne lives in Alberta for six months of the year, but comes home to Newfoundland every spring.
He and some family were out on an excursion around the Bonavista peninsula and Clarenville area when they saw the large school.
He says he has seen bigger schools before, but that this was the largest he has seen in a number of years.
