ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Taxi companies in Lewisporte and Bay Roberts are receiving funding to operate accessible vehicles.
Lewisporte Taxi and My Taxi Cabs in Bay Roberts were identified in a provincial government release today, July 4, as two of five recipients of investments through the accessible taxi funding program and the age-friendly transportation program to purchase or retrofit their vehicles for accessibility.
Bursey’s Taxi in Conception Bay South, Star Taxi in Corner Brook and Newfound Cabs in St. John’s are the other recipients.
The funding expands the total number of locations where accessible taxi services are available to eight communities.
Accessible taxis are also operating in Grand Falls-Windsor, the Whitbourne/Dildo area and Norris Point/Rocky Harbour.
“In just three years, we have gone from zero to over 2,000 accessible taxi trips per month,” Children, Seniors and Social Development Minister Lisa Dempster said in the release. Dempster is also the minister responsible for the Status of Persons with Disabilities.
“Accessible transportation is absolutely essential to participation and inclusion in society. By breaking down these barriers to inclusion, we are working towards a society that is accessible for all residents of our province.”
A call for submissions for the 2018-19 accessible taxi grants is expected to be opened early this fall.
