Terra Nova MHA Colin Holloway made the announcement on April 29 in a Facebook post, saying he has been advised of the tenders closing by the Department of Transportation and Works.
The bridge, which runs on Route 233 and connects the two sides of Port Blandford, was due for repairs, Port Blandford Mayor Chad Holloway said.
“Over the last number of years there have been some major issues with the bridge that runs across Port Blandford. The report online showed a whole bunch of things listed; a lot of structural issues and concrete is degrading,” Holloway told The Packet.
Holloway said it is good to hear the tenders have closed.
“It’s great to see. It’s something that really needs to be replaced. It is in really hard shape. Just recently there were pictures on social media with several residents posting about pieces of concrete falling off the bridge,” he said.
Holloway said the bridge went out to tender as a package deal with two other bridges a few years ago, but didn’t get finalized.
Now once the project is finalized, Holloway said the town will see if there will be any issues with traffic, but he doesn’t anticipate any.
“Usually, they do one side of the bridge at a time. We see that on the Trans Canada and work that’s been done on the Middle Brook Bridge in the past. People will just be happy the bridge is being fixed,” Holloway said.
