Mercer has moved into the role from his previous position of senior strategist effective immediately.
There had been speculation even before previous chief of staff, longtime Liberal Kelvin Parsons left the position in July that Mercer — hired in June — would become the new chief of staff.
The annual salary for the chief of staff position is $147,680.
Premier announces senior communications team
Premier Dwight Ball — who’s been embroiled in public relations turmoil since the provincial budget was released in the spring, prompting mass protests against its austerity — has a new communications team.
“Their experience and commitment to the work of government will enhance and complement the current team. I have great confidence in their ability to provide support as we continue with the work of government,” Ball said in a news release Thursday.
Andrew Caddell is appointed as director of communications, effective Aug. 22
Michelle Cannizzaro is appointed as media relations manager, effective immediately.
Jillian Hood is appointed as content manager, effective immediately.
Caddell is returning to the province after working as a senior policy advisor for the Department of Global Affairs Canada, the Department of Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development, and Health Canada, according to the biographies released by the premier’s office.
Cannizzaro has spent the last eight years providing strategic communications advice in the private non-profit sectors. Cannizzaro was the lead communications manager for the Canadian Cancer Society’s Daffodil Place Capital Campaign and acted as campaign manager for the Home from the Sea Capital Campaign.
Hood implemented a social media campaign for Team Trudeau in the lead up to the federal election.
