The following letter was received by the Kinsmen Club of Notre Dame who forwarded it to the Pilot for publication with the permission of Rod Vatcher:

Dear President,

I am writing to convey my sincere gratitude and to say Thank You to the members of your organization for your continued sponsorship of our local Air Cadet Squadron, “617 Dambusters”.

Over the years, the Kinsmen Club of Notre Dame, along with the Kinette Club and K-40 has surely fulfilled and has indeed gone beyond your commitment of “Serving the Community’s Greatest Need”.

The Air Cadet Motto is “To Learn — To Serve — To Advance”. The Aim of the Air Cadet program is to “develop in youth the attributed of good citizenship and leadership; promote physical fitness and to stimulate the interest of youth in the sea, land and air activities of the Canadian Forces. There could be no better group for an organization such as yours to affiliate themselves with than the Royal Canadian Air Cadets!!

The experiences that my children in particular have enjoyed were made possible in part due to the time, efforts and commitments of your members. They have been able to travel to new places, see new things and make new friends. They have had the opportunity to go flying in gliders and in planes ranging from single engine to a Hercules transport. They have been shown the value of volunteerism. They have been shown the value of volunteerism. They have been shown the importance of “giving back” through participation in your fundraisers and Municipal events. I could (go) on and on.

My Daughter Colette had the opportunity to travel to numerous places including spending multiple summers on course in Greenwood and Acadia (Cornwallis) in Nova Scotia. This summer (letter was dated prior to his departure) my Son Tyler will again travel to the Greenwood Air Cadet Summer Training Centre in Nova Scotia. This time he will participate in a three week course in “Fitness and Sports”.

Air Cadets has had a direct positive effect on the type of persons I want my children to become. This has been made possible in part by the sponsorship the Kinsmen provide.

Our community and particularly the youth of Lewisporte and area have benefited greatly from the generosity of the Kinsmen. The support given to the Cadets is a choice well made.

The founder of Kinsmen, Hal Rogers, a veteran of WWII, is quoted as saying he believed in “providing and promoting the finest and most effective education possible for our young people”. I say that your sponsorship of the 617 Dambusters Air Cadet Squadron has helped provide an education for hundreds of young people in our community. I’m sure that Hal Rogers would be proud of your accomplishments.

So, in the words of the naval traditions of the world, I say to the Kinsmen, Kinette and K-40 Clubs of Notre Dame. . . . . BRAVO ZULU. . . . Well Done!!

Thank you Kinsmen for your continued support.

Sincerely,

Rod Vatcher
