Writer defends seal hunt

Dear Editor, Question: "Do you think it is time to end the commercial seal hunt in Canada? Why or why not?"

My response? I think it's appalling we are asked this question by anyone.

We know the hunt is humane, sustainable, ethical, and necessary. Killing the seal hunt is one step on a downward slope and most don't want to see it or admit to it. It is giving into bullies not because we are wrong but because we are being intimidated. We are the perfect targets for this treatment just like in the schoolyard the bullies take over.

I would like to know a way to get Newfoundlanders fighting mad about this and rally to change. Our government, while not perfect in their approach, at least is trying but they can't fight the money effort used by animal rights activists.

I hope the government does continue to try to do something but we as Newfoundlanders have to show solidarity against this injustice on the world markets. So much support here in Newfoundland for the hunt, we get weak when faced with the influences outside of our province.

We shy away from standing up for what we believe, just like the causalities of a bully. We actually start to believe that we are wrong and that there is something wrong with us for doing what we do but that is what the bullies want to accomplish. This will continue until we get to the point where we commit suicide against our own way of life, traditions, and livelihoods. This will be a tragedy to Newfoundland and society as a whole.

Those bullies want to make themselves feel better by putting us down. They also take advantage of the term "animal welfare," which is a far cry from "animal rights," to accomplish their agenda. Using the terms interchangeably furthers their goals, allowing them to take greater advantage of the uneducated to further their agenda.

Newfoundland sealers care about animal welfare, that's why sealers have bent over backwards to appease the animal rights activists, and to participate on world markets, because we have no issue with animal welfare. Caring about animal welfare will never be good enough for them. They want us to stop eating meat altogether; not just seal.

As I said, stopping the seal hunt is just one step on their agenda. Generally, all people will care about animal welfare but all industries will have idiots that will not. These activists will capitalize on this and use it against those who are concerned about the animals against them for support and funding. It is a marketing strategy for the activists that works.

However, all ranchers, farmers of livestock, hunters, and meat-eaters should stand in solidarity against them support the seal hunt.

I can go on and on and there are times that I feel like, "if you can't beat them, join them." That is the absolutely wrong thing to do. That is being a traitor. I am a proud Newfoundlander, and I will continue fighting for Newfoundland and our rights.
