Twillingate - For the first-time ever a female president will be heading up the executive of the minor hockey association for Twillingate-New World Island.

Connie Warren, who has a son in the Atoms division, was elected president at a meeting called for parents on May 20. Taking the position as president hadn't entered her mind prior to going to the meeting, she informed, but "someone had to do it."

"I have a son in minor hockey and I realized that if a president were not elected then there may not even be minor hockey next year, so I let the nomination stand," she said. "All I can say is that I'll do my best."

Warren was not the only female elected to the executive. The meeting, called following an earlier attempt on May 6 that saw only five parents in attendance, had eight parents turn out resulting in three females and one male being elected to the executive. Joanne Rogers accepted the office of treasurer and Carolyn Burt the responsibility as secretary. David King will be the league registrar, while Roy Lodge is past-president. The position of vice-president is still unfilled.

"A very disappointing turn-out," suggested King. "We had 100 hockey players registered last year and out of that we can only get eight parents to show up?"

With the executive in place, however, it is hoped that other parents will pitch in and give support when called upon. The executive already has plans underway to deal with summer activities and now will be able to send a representative to the planning meeting of Newfoundland and Labrador Minor Hockey scheduled for early June.
