LEWISPORTE The Lewisporte Academy Lynx started off their volleyball season in true fashion winning a 16-team Invitational Volleyball tournament in Lewisporte held Oct. 24-25.

The team had great success last season under the coaching direction of teacher Dean Catling in which they won several tournaments and attracted attention from other schools as being one of the best teams in the province at the junior level.

The local tournament was broken down in to two tier divisions with the Grade 7 and 8 teams playing in the tournament as well which also gave them valuable experience watching and playing against the older teams. This has proven to be an asset for younger players as they learn faster from the senior and more experienced teams.

This has proven to be an asset for younger players as they learn faster from the senior and more experienced teams.

In the tier one division Carmanville who has been a strong volleyball school won the final against Glovertown 25-6 and 25-7. That left the tier two championship to be decided with the host Lynx going up against Exploits Valley Intermediate. The Lynx showed some of the best volleyball during the match which attracted many fans. They pulled out the first set win with a 25-16 win. Kelsei Rogers serve was too much for Exploits Valley as she served eight straight points off her hard overhand to lead the Lynx to the first set lead. The Lynx didnt hold back at all in the second set as they were eager to finish off the Exploits team winning 25-12 to clinch the championship.

Catling was impressed with the win but as also emphasized that big things could come from this team this season.

Ive been coaching the team for four years now and the team as grown into a strong team which should do well in every tournament, he said.

The Lynx took that momentum championship to St. Johns where they played in the Volleyfest tournament Nov. 1-3. Tournament results unavailable as of The Pilot deadline.
