Christmas Cup tradition

LEWISPORTE - The Christmas Cup has been touted has one of the highlights of many local players holidays and something to look forward to during the holiday season.


The two-day tournament, which starts on Boxing Day, has become very popular in recent years and has grown every year since. In its fourth year, the 2011 event included eight teams, up from seven in 2010 and six the previous year.

With 90 players participating, a draft was held to pick the teams with eight captains selecting. The eight captains included Greg Feltham, Greg Eveleigh, Mitch Oake, Brandon Nicholas, Keith Budden, Steve Brown, Lucas Eveleigh and Mike Hutchings. Greg Feltham, one of the event coordinators for the event said, "All the players are local with the exception of a few and has been gaining interest from players and fans since the first year."

The tournament featured some prominent local hockey talent such as Lucas Batt, who is currently playing competitive hockey in Saskatchewan and Jon Oake, who is also playing competitive hockey in Ontario. Others included current Cataracts Brandon Nicholas and Mitch Oake, as well as the majority of the Lewisporte Senior Seahawks. With Mitch Oake winning the past two Christmas Cups, his team was the team to beat and came very close to securing a third championship, however they were defeated in the final by Greg Felthams team 4-3.

Semi-finals and finals attracted many fans and were a hit from the start with many players showing their interest before and after the tournament on social networks like Facebook and twitter.
