BUCHANS, N.L. – Nine boys and girls proudly accepted their preschool diplomas at the James Hornell Boys and Girls Club in Buchans May 17.
The preschool class includes Alyson Caines, Neveah Hobbs and Madison Blundon (Millertown) — these three will move on to kindergarten at Lakeside Academy in September — while Rachel Kirby, Alexander Gushue, Charleigh LeDrew, Luke Blundon (Millertown), Skylar Brown (Millertown) and Ryker Dixen will return to preschool in the fall.
“This year we had nine students and that's probably the most we had in the last few years,” said the clubs executive director Gary Noftle. “We wish them all the best.
“Next year we will have six of them back. We're not sure if we're having any more than that next year – there's nobody else that age around town now.”
Noftle noted some highlights happening at the club.
“There are a few things (going on) directly related to this age group,” he said, “One is that the playground equipment is ordered and on the way. It is going next to the preschool room. That will be on the go sometime this summer. It's for ages seven or eight and down.”
Noftle said they are also looking into a Job Creation Project grant to continue with the greening of club property.
There are 41 boxes right now for the gardening project, so parents with children interested in this are welcome to take part. If there are any spaces left after families with club affiliation get theirs, then Noftle said the remaining gardening boxes will open up to the public.
Noftle thanked all the parents and grandparents for the interest they have in the children and the town.
“If you have any problems or concerns, write a letter or call and let us know,” he said. “Our goal is to serve you and the kids of this community and we'll never lose sight of that.”
